The Arctic Circle is divided between the 8 countries-Russia, United States of America, Canada, Greenland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Iceland. These countries have a 370km economic range around their countries. They also have ten years to extend this by proving a portion of the Arctic is part of their continental shelf. All eight countries launched investigation to establish claims and extend their territory. Apart from Iceland the countries need to create a relationship with their extended territories in order to permit government. Norway, Sweden and Finland all act as if it is a part of their country.
One of the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organisation's most senior commanders is warning that global warming and a race for resources could cause conflict in the Arctic. He said that, "The cascading interests and broad implications stemming from the effects of climate change should cause today's global leaders to take stock, and unify their efforts to ensure the Arctic remains a zone of co-operation – rather than proceed down the icy slope towards a zone of competition, or worse a zone of conflict!" Currently there is a build up of military in the Arctic and though arguments are currently being dealt with peacefully climate change may alter this in the race for exploitation of natural resources!
